Full Time Income

A full-time income differs from a full-time job. In the United States, the standard for a full-time job is a 40 hour work week.  An employee is paid an agreed upon sum of money (salary) based on fulfilling the job requirements and working the required number of hours. A full-time job may include additional benefits in the form of paid vacation, health insurance, and savings or retirement plans.

As a consultant, small business owner, or freelance worker, it is possible to generate sufficient work to produce a full-time income and at the same time set a flexible work schedule. Full-time income is the amount of money earned over a span of time an individual perceives as necessary to cover their living and business expenses. Generating a full-time income does not always require full-time work.

Considerations when comparing a full-time income to a full-time job:

•    Business and income must be self-generated
•    All “benefits” must be individually contracted and purchased
•    The individual is responsible for paying all taxes

For Example: A business consultant made $35,000 per year as an employee of ABC Corporation.  As a consultant they want to make $40,000 per year.  The consultant works intermittently throughout the calendar year, earns $40,000, and considers this a full-time income.  The consultant pays for their own benefits, taxes and business expenses.
